O momento de adução do joelho (a vermelho) aumenta conforme a distancia da força de reação do solo (Ground reaction Force - vector preto) se afasta do eixo mecânico da tibia e do femur (linha a tracejado). A força no côndilo interno do joelho é proporcional ao momento de adução do joelho: um aumento de uma unidade do momento de adução do joelho faz aumentar 6 vezes a possibilidade de ter uma gonartrose (artrose do joelho) ao fim de 6 anos.

Imagine que os seus joelhos tem uma roldana (rótula ou patela) que ajuda a transmitir a força dos músculos anteriores das suas coxas para as suas pernas, esses músculos são de tal ordem importantes para o nosso equilíbrio e locomoção que tem um reflexo monossináptico associado (ao nível do nervo que sai da espinal medula entre as vértebras L3-L4), apenas para evitar que caiamos para trás. A rotula serve também para transmitir as forças verticais dos poderosos músculos do quadricípite-crural. Sempre que este se contrai este pequeno osso vai contra o fémur, e a sua cartilagem é posta à prova. Quanto maior a flexão/inclinação entre a coxa e a perna mais comprimida será a rótula contra o fémur. A dor patelo femoral (Patelo Femoral Pain - PFP) é a degeneração (artrose) da cartilagem provocada pela compressão da rótula por aumento de flexão da coxa. Correr e andar descalço e o calçado minimalista promovem maior extensão do joelho.
